We are excited to see our collaboration with Delkia come to life at the Farnborough International Airshow 2024, where the Project Dragonfly Mark 1 prototype air vehicle is being showcased.
Airframe Designs was presented with a basic concept model and tasked with applying Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) principles to transform it into a polished, professional product ready for display. Despite initial challenges such as defining attachment methods for key components, our team demonstrated agility and expertise to deliver a robust and aesthetically pleasing final product. This was achieved by optimising the model, determining suitable materials, and defining assembly methodologies.
Utilising our aerospace standard Stratasys 450mc printers, we selected Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate (ASA) for its robustness and suitability for the project. The integration of 3D-printed parts with carbon fibre tubing was carefully executed to ensure the model’s structural integrity and surface finish, making it ideal for wrapping and display at the airshow.
Jerrod Hartley, CEO of Airframe Designs, remarked, “This project showcased our ability to respond swiftly to customer needs and deliver high-quality solutions. We are proud to have collaborated with Delkia on this project and look forward to exploring more opportunities in the drone sector.”
Garry Sellick, Additive Manufacturing Manager at Airframe Designs, added, “The Dragonfly drone model was like a giant Airfix kit. We had to make critical decisions regarding materials, adhesives, and assembly techniques to ensure compatibility and achieve a professional finish, whilst maintaining the principles of DfAM. This project underscores our comprehensive turn-key service, transforming concepts into reality using our advanced digital and additive manufacturing technologies.”
Working with Delkia was a very positive experience. Their clear communication and collaborative approach greatly facilitated the project’s success. The synergy between our teams ensured that challenges were addressed quickly, and innovative solutions were implemented efficiently. Delkia’s professionalism and expertise were instrumental in achieving the high-quality outcome that will be showcased at Farnborough.
The partnership between Airframe Designs and Delkia signifies a promising future, with potential for further collaboration in drone development and other areas. Airframe Designs offers mechanical analysis, design, and manufacturing expertise, while Delkia brings systems specialism to the table, creating a strong synergy. This collaboration aims to strengthen relationships and explore new opportunities, particularly within the defence drone sector, building on existing partnerships with industry leaders like BAE Systems.
