Introduction

AFD was tasked to create a 3D scan of the interior of a Beechcraft King Air. This was done with photogrammetry (a method which utilises photographs to create 3D models) and 3D laser scanning technology. This was required to simplify the retrofitting process for the aircraft.

3D Scanning

3D scanning technology is able to rapidly decrease lead times whilst achieving the highest possible quality. As shown in the images, there are many detailed parts and components which the 3D scanning technology was able to turn into the finalised 3D model. This not only decreases the lead time but also keeps the data as close to the original aircraft as possible.

Additional Challenges

Some of the ceiling structure was required to be scanned in a higher resolution for the purpose of fitting a new external antenna. This required the scan to cover the aircrafts skin, frames, stringers, pipes, cables and ducting. Through this higher quality scan, AFD was able to achieve the customers requirements by converting the scan into usable 3D CAD models.

Conclusion

Within the timeframe of only two days, Airframe Designs was able to scan the Beechcraft King Air’s interior with high efficiency and accuracy. The data collected was transformed into CAD models by skilled engineers working within AFD. This took an additional five days of post processing.
